Melissa Hampton: 2 million Coloradans left behind

For those of us paying attention to the Trump administration’s attacks on health care, this next move comes as no shock. The administration has decided to stop defending our current healthcare law amidst a lawsuit stating that they, the administration, agree it is unconstitutional — thus eliminating protections for those of us with pre-existing conditions.

To be clear, pre-existing conditions are not the result of some bad lifestyle choice but rather, come from inherited genetic conditions or pre-dispositions that individuals have no control over. Furthermore, these situations can come on at any time of life and can happen to any one of us. Even you and your family, Rep. Tipton.

Here on the Western Slope, health care is often at the front of people’s minds — whether or not it is affordable or whether we even have access. Astonishingly, our own Congressman Scott Tipton has voted over 50 times to repeal and remove protections for pre-existing conditions. Yes, Rep. Tipton, we are watching your voting record.

There are 300,000 of us in your district and over two million in the state of Colorado with pre-existing conditions, a lot of people to put in jeopardy. So here is my question: if your job, Rep. Tipton, is to represent us, your constituents, what is your motivation for voting  against healthcare options that will keep us safe and well?
