Mayor Cargo Rodeman: It isn’t the town

Almost every Sunday there are 2 negative “Sound Offs” printed about Oak Creek. My response to the obviously angry, bitter and anonymous authors of those truly ridiculous attempts to put Oak Creek in a bad light, comes from a 1923 edition of The Oak Creek Times and is as follows:

“Your Town”

If you want to live in the kind of a Town

That’s the kind of a town you’d like,

You needn’t slip your clothes in a grip

And start on a long, long hike.

You’ll find elsewhere what you left behind,

For there’s nothing that’s really new,

It’s a knock to yourself when you knock your town.

It isn’t your town, it’s you.

Real towns aren’t made by men afraid

Lest somebody else gets ahead;

Where everyone works and nobody shirks

You can raise a town from the dead.

And if you make your personal stake,

Your neighbor can make one too,

Your town will be what you want it to be,

It isn’t your town, it’s you.

The author of this poem was anonymous also, but much wiser than the “Sound Off” duo. I sincerely believe that at least 95 percent of Oak Creek residents care deeply for this community and do what they can to make it better. I am an eyewitness to the daily sharing, caring and hard work given freely by the good people of this valley toward the betterment of our community. Anyone who hasn’t seen this heartwarming phenomenon should look in the mirror, because it isn’t Oak Creek, it’s you.
