Mayer promoted to A team

Olympic medalist Travis Mayer was promoted to the A team of the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team on Tuesday after winning his first career World Cup on Jan. 15 in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Mayer, a Steamboat Springs resident who captured silver in the 2002 Olympics, began the season on the B team. He took off most of last winter to focus on his schooling at Cornell University but is back on the slopes full-time in an effort to make the 2006 Olympics in Italy.

Mayer’s Olympic teammate Jeret Peterson also was promoted to the A team this week after winning two World Cup aerials events this season. Peterson is from Boise, Idaho, and is leading the World Cup overall standings in men’s aerials.

This week, the U.S. Ski Team members will be in Deer Valley, Utah, for the Chevrolet Freestyle International World Cup.
