Plenty of opportunities for volunteers at United Way event

If you don’t have money to give, an even better gift to the community is time.

On May 12, the Routt County United Way is hosting its annual Day of Caring with a long list of volunteer opportunities.

This is the eighth year for the Day of Caring, an event that sends more than 200 volunteers out into the community for one morning. By lunch, the jobs are done and volunteers are given a free lunch by the Ski Town Lions Club at Olympian Hall.

This year, volunteers are needed at the Selbe Apartments and Mountain View Manor for senior citizens.

“There are half a dozen people there who would like volunteers to come in and do things for them that will take no time at all,” said Routt County United Way Executive Director Millie Beall. “It could be something as simple as changing a light bulb in the bathroom or cleaning the windows inside and out, but these are things that people just can’t handle on their own.”

There is another older woman who needs weather-stripping around her door. A crew is needed at Yampa River Botanic Park and at the Tread of Pioneers Museum for spring cleaning.

Many people are being paid by their employers to go out for the morning and give back to the community, Beall said. Wells Fargo, TIC, American Ski Corp. and Alpine Bank are sending crews. Beall hopes to see more organizations do the same.

Volunteers are needed countywide for projects in Hayden, South Routt and Steamboat Springs.
