— A resident found out Monday that trying to scare away a moose by firing a gun is frowned upon in Steamboat Springs.

At about 5:45 p.m., a neighbor called police to report a man who came outside and fired a gun multiple times in the air in the 2800 block of Alpenglow Way.

Police contacted the 81-year-old man, and he admitted to firing six shots from a revolver.

The moose was with two calfs.

The man told police he tried to yell at the moose to scare it away, but it did not work. The man said the moose had been eating his flowers and shrubs.

The man’s wife was upset at him for firing the shots in the neighborhood, and police gave the man a summons to appear in court for illegally discharging a firearm within city limits.

Earlier on Monday in the same area, a woman called police because of moose. She wanted someone to come and scare the moose away so she could go pick up her child.
