Man arrested for trespassing at Steamboat home said he was going to cook a potato
Steamboat Springs police arrested a man for trespassing on Thursday after he entered a home on Pine Street in the city, according to an arrest affidavit.
The man was previously charged for entering the same home in a prior incident and now faces a protection order handed down by a Routt County Judge on Friday.
Artemio Esquer-Miranda, 59, was charged with first-degree criminal trespass, a Class 6 felony, according to the arrest affidavit.
Police were dispatched around 11 a.m. Thursday after the landlord called about a man entering a home that he owns, according to the affidavit. The landlord added that tenants were inside the home when the man went inside.
According to the affidavit, Esquer-Miranda stated that he, “went inside the residence to cook food that he had brought,” and added that “he did not see anyone inside.” When Esquer-Miranda was searched, police found a potato in his pocket.
The affidavit added that Esquer-Miranda had previously trespassed on the same property and was issued a summons order for the charges.
In a bond hearing Friday, Routt County Judge Erin Wilson stated that Esquer-Miranda has failed to appear in court at least a dozen times.
According to Deputy District Attorney Joseph Bucci, Esquer-Miranda received 10 days in jail for a petty offense and 30 days in jail for driving while “ability impaired.”
“He’s been out of custody for two weeks and he’s already picked up another case,” Bucci told the court Friday.
Judge Wilson issued a protection order in the case and set the bond at $5,000 cash or surety.
Esquer-Miranda is expected to remain in Routt County Jail. His next court date is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
