Man arrested after allegedly assaulting boy

A 51-year-old Arizona man was arrested on suspicion of hitting a 12-year-old boy in the arm with a baseball bat after the boy reportedly hit the man’s wife in the head with a Wiffle ball during a game Thursday.

Steamboat Springs Police Sgt. Dale Coyner said Thomas Edward Pierchala, of Anthem, Ariz., allegedly took a bat from a 12-year-old boy who was playing a game of Wiffle ball behind a restaurant in the 1900 block of Ski Time Square Drive. Coyner said the Pierchala is accused of using the bat to strike the boy on his left arm. The man also allegedly pushed the boy in the chest.

The boy sustained minor injuries, including a bruise to the arm and soreness but was otherwise OK, Coyner said.

Pierchala’s wife did not suffer any injuries from being hit with the ball, Coyner said.

Coyner said the boy’s father witnessed the incident and called police.

The boy’s father told police he wanted to press charges, Coyner said.

Pierchala was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault, a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Pierchala was taken to the Routt County Jail, where he posted $750 bond Friday. Pierchala is scheduled to appear in Routt County Court at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 1.
