Mail theft reported north of Hayden

Christine Metz

Theft from mailboxes along Routt County roads 76 and 78 was reported last week.

Parcels and personal mail was taken from about four mailboxes, said Jorde Neumiller, the officer in charge of the Hayden Post Office.

The Routt County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Postal Service are investigating the crimes, Neumiller said. The postal inspectors think the crime could be linked to identity theft, Neumiller said.

Stealing mail is a federal offense.

The mailboxes were along the county roads about eight miles north of Hayden. The roads where the mail was taken are not remote, Neumiller said.

Chris Welch, who lives on C.R. 78, said a bill was stolen from his mailbox Friday afternoon.

Welch said he heard that mail was taken from about six mailboxes on C.R. 78 and four mailboxes on C.R. 76.

“You feel safe living out in the country. I don’t know if it’s kids … or an organized crime ring of identity-theft people,” Welch said. “It is very disconcerting.”

He said one of his neighbors had boxes from L.L. Bean stolen. Neumiller said a box of personal checks was taken.

The Hayden Post Office is holding the mail that used to be delivered to the area until the incident is resolved, Neumiller said.

“It’s a very serious offense,” she said.
