Lost Solar Fire source of smoke in Yampa Valley
Steamboat Springs — Strong southwest winds ushered in smoke to the Yampa Valley from a wildfire burning in the Blanco Ranger District in a remote area of the Flat Tops Wilderness.
The Lost Solar Fire about 25 miles east of Meeker is about 1,000 acres and started last month after a lightning strike.
The fire is burning in a densely wooded area in rocky terrain on the White River National Forest.
Firefighters are not actively fighting the fire and are focusing their efforts on protecting structures in the South Fork drainage area.
Officials advise visitors and hunters to be aware of changing conditions. For current fire information, contact the Blanco Ranger District at 970-878-4039. On weekends, call the Upper Colorado River Inter-agency Fire Management Unit hotline at 970-244-3104 for updates.
About 45 miles from the Lost Solar Fire, the Silver Creek fire is burning in the Routt National Forest in the Sarvis Creek Wilderness. The fire was listed as being 27 acres Tuesday and was not contributing to the smoke in the valley.
Across the Continental Divide in Jackson County, the Beaver Creek Fire has burned 37,627 acres.
