Lodwick, Fletcher team up for fourth on World Cup

Members of the U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team said they hoped to work out their kinks in these early World Cup events, anything to be primed and ready come February’s Olympic Games.

That plan appears to be playing out right on schedule. Saturday the squad had its best day of the season as Steamboat Springs skiers Todd Lodwick and Bryan Fletcher teamed up in a relay to place fourth at the World Cup in Ramsau, Austria.

The pair logged the day’s fastest combined ski team, rocketing from 14th in a 20-team field after the jumping to fourth. They started 44 seconds out of the lead, but Fletcher pulled into a large pack with six other teams.

Lodwick then hit it hard on the anchor leg, and the duo finished just 10 seconds back of the fastest Norwegian team, which won the day. The United States team was 1.2 seconds behind third and only 1.8 seconds behind another Norwegian squad in second.

Two more Steamboaters, Taylor Fletcher and Brett Denney, combined to finish 15th.

“It was an awesome race today for both USA teams,” coach Dave Jarrett said in a U.S. Ski Team release. “We put ourselves in position not only to get a podium result, but also to win. It was there, and that is all you can ask for.”

The athletes will take part in an individual event today.
