Locals featured in national publications

— A pair of Yampa Valley residents have been pictured in two different national publications this month.

A photograph of longtime south valley rancher Vernon Summer was published in “National Geographic Travelers” new collectors edition.

This issue of the magazine is devoted to “50 Places of a Lifetime America” in categories ranging from urban spaces to wild places.

And mountain bike pioneer Kent Eriksen is pictured in the October issue of “Outside.”

Eriksen didn’t make the cover of “Outside” that honor was reserved for another cyclist, Lance Armstrong.

The October issue is devoted to the best of everything associated with outdoor recreation, and Eriksen, who founded the Moots line of cycles, was named “The Best Mountain Bike Builder.”

“Outside” notes that Moots led the revolutionary switch from steel to titanium bike frames.

It calls the new Moots Smoothie the strongest, lightest, most durable cross-country mountain-bike frame on the planet. Smoothies are priced at around $5,175 each.

The October issue of “Traveler” is devoted to special American cities and natural landscapes.

Summer’s picture illustrates a piece on the Colorado Rockies written by brewing tycoon Pete Coors.

It is filed under the category “Country Unbound.” The picture shows Summer working with horses on his ranch south of Steamboat Springs.
