STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A group of eight Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters joined firefighters from around the country Monday to pay tribute to those impacted by the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

It was the first time the firefighters scaled the stairs of the Sheraton Steamboat Resort.

To mimic the 110 stories of stairs that New York firefighters climbed on 9/11, the local firefighters climbed up and down the nine-and-a-half-story Sheraton tower 12 times.

“You kind of want to feel what it was like to go up all those stairs,” firefighter Christian Keller said.

It was no easy task, taking the firefighters 45 minutes to an hour.

The firefighters were carrying about 45 pounds worth of gear. Some also carried tools and 25-pound hoses.

“It’s pretty hefty, and you feel it,” Keller said. “I’m feeling my calves right now.”
