STEAMBOAT SPRINGSApplications for Leadership Steamboat, the community-oriented program that teaches leadership skills, are due Aug. 15. Leadership Steamboat is an 11-week program that runs from September through June that focuses on how to actively contribute to the community and develop leadership skills.

The 10-year program with 162 graduates allows participants to focus on key community issues and meet with local decision-makers. The program typically meets every Friday with attendance being mandatory and the cost is $400, $325 of which many employers pay.

COUNT PLANNING SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT AS MASTER PLAN REVIEWED

STEAMBOAT SPRINGSKeeping growth out of rural Routt County will be one of the big issues addressed this week as county officials meet with the public on updating the county’s master plan and zoning regulations.

If county commissioners and planning commission have their way, county subdivisions like Saddle Mountain Ranchettes, Big Valley, Moonhill Meadows, Country Green, Dakota Ridge and Whitewood would be developments of the past.

Many of these subdivisions are built on former ranchland and have parcels less than 35 acres but more than four acres, which some believe creates sprawl.

“We will be looking at discouraging development outside of identified growth areas,” county planner John Eastman said.

Other issues to be discussed include wildfire hazards and home occupations that may be illegal.

The meetings will be at Hayden Town Hall at 7 p.m. Wednesday and at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Commissioners Hearing Room at the Courthouse Annex Building in Steamboat Springs.

CANDIDATES FOR CITY COUNCIL SEATS STILL UNDECIDED THIS WEEK

STEAMBOAT SPRINGSOne week into the process of November City Council candidates pulling petitions and starting to get signatures before the Aug. 27 deadline, there are a total of six potential candidates in the running, with a few still deciding whether they will run.

As of Friday afternoon, there were no candidates for the District I seat, which will be vacated by City Council President Kevin Bennett.

There are still two weeks before the petitions are due back to the city clerk’s office.
