Steamboat Springs — One of Megan Morgan’s two young daughters goes at coloring book pages with a blue crayon, covering the entire printed design in color.

The other daughter tends to color in the lines, filling in each space with carefully chosen illustration.

In her new project, “The Steamboat Springs Coloring Book,” Morgan hopes to satisfy both types of coloring book user, reaching children and adults of all ages with a book that features local scenes and people.

When she finished the project, which went on sale at Epilogue Book Co. at the end of November, Morgan said her daughters — Ava, 7, and Neva, 5 — “were so excited to finally sit down and color it.”

The coloring book is 24 pages long and includes scenes from family-friendly, low-cost destinations, Morgan said. She sees potential for the book to grow or spawn sequels, with a variety of local characters and scenes remaining to include on coloring pages.

“I’m sure there are many other places and things. … I tried to scratch the surface of our main ones in 24 pages,” Morgan said.

Families on ski vacations or local families through the holidays can have down time in their schedules, Morgan said. She hopes “The Steamboat Springs Coloring Book” will be a way to creatively fill that recreational niche, she said.

Morgan photographed locations across town and used archive photos from The Tread of Pioneers Museum for her coloring book images. From those she created drawings with a range of detail, working several days at Leisure Mountain Studio coffee shop and art gallery in Yampa while her daughters were at school.

Epilogue Book Co. owner Erica Fogue said the coloring book is the store’s second-best seller, behind Harriet Freiberger and Ken Proper’s new book about the history of Steamboat.

“People are absolutely loving it because Megan did such a great job putting it together and her drawings are just beautiful,” Fogue said. “She’s got easy ones for the younger kids and very complex ones for the older kids to adults, so we actually have quite a few adults who are getting it in their stockings this year.”

Many of the pages include blank space and activity suggestions. A shot of Mount Werner and the More Barn asks children to draw a picture of their family enjoying a day of skiing. Morgan led a coloring activity with children at Epilogue on Dec. 12 and said she’s interested in doing similar activities.

“I like to sit down and work with kids because they always do things I don’t even think of. … Their creativity is endless,” Morgan said.

Northwest Graphics printed the book locally, and local retailers will carry the product. “The Steamboat Springs Coloring Book” is available at Epilogue through the holiday season and will be available at other local retailers starting Jan. 1.
