Little League Majors lose in opening round of state

— The Steamboat Springs Little League Majors team lost in the opening round of the state tournament on Saturday, falling, 12-0, to Academy.

Academy, winners of the District 5 tournament, got strong pitching performances and was able to take advantage of Steamboat’s defensive struggles.

“We made a few too many errors to let some runs in,” Steamboat coach Doug Starkey said.

“There were a couple of innings we should have been out of it for sure.”

Drew Williamson and David Cropper each pitched well for Steamboat but couldn’t get past the struggles on defense.

Steamboat resumes play at 10 a.m. today at Summit Middle School.

“We’re going to have to make the routine plays in the field and hopefully put the bat on the ball a little bit more,” Starkey said.
