Musical fairy talk premiers for Piknik Theatre on library lawn

Bud Werner Memorial Library presents The Great American Laughing Stock Company’s premier of  “The Bee Man of Orn (and Other Stories You Can’t Quite Remember),” a story of fairy tales you’ve rarely seen, at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5 on the library lawn. Join the ensemble of musicians and actors on an adventure through the fantastical land of Orn, where participants meet the White Cat — a feline with a dark and tragic past, the Real Kitchen Maid — a down-to-earth hero in a scullery full of princesses and the titular Bee Man — a bee-keeping hermit on a quest to discover his original form. This musical fairy tale was created for Piknik Theatre and inspired by the stories of Edith Nesbit, Madame d’Aulnoy and Frank Stockton. This is part of the free Piknik Theatre Festival, and audiences at this live theater event are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner, blanket and seating. New documentary by ‘Chasing Ice’ team to screen at library

Bud Werner Memorial Library, Yampa Valley Sustainability Council, Environment Colorado and Great Old Broads for Wilderness present a free community screening of the new documentary film “The Human Element” at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 in Library Hall. Renowned photographer James Balog, best known for “Chasing Ice,” uses his camera to reveal how environmental change is affecting the lives of everyday Americans. Following the four classical elements — air, earth, fire and water — to frame his journey, Balog explores wildfires, hurricanes, sea level rise, coal mining and the changes in the air we breathe. This new documentary directed by Matthew Testa tells an urgent story while giving inspiration for a more balanced relationship between humanity and nature.

The evening is scheduled to include an introduction by “The Human Element” co-producer and Steamboat Springs native Daniel Wright. A community discussion will follow the screening.
