Library’s ukulele celebration continues with community jam

Join the Bud Werner Memorial Library for the Community Uke Jam at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 in Library Hall.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Bud Werner Memorial Library presents a free community screening of the short documentary “Heart Strings” followed by a Community Uke Jam in celebration of the new collection of Bud Ukes at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 in Library Hall.

For nearly 100 years, Kamaka and Sons have crafted fine musical instruments from their tiny shop in Honolulu. “Heart Strings: The Story of the Kamaka Ukulele” is a story of the Kamaka family, whose history is about as close as one can come to the actual history of the ukulele itself.

From Samuel’s apprenticeship with Manuel Nunes, the Portuguese man who first introduced the instrument to the islands, to creating “the Jake,” an ‘ukulele model for virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro, Kamaka Hawaii has been at the forefront of the ukulele’s presence in the world.

After the 25-minute film, the community is invited to bring their own ukuleles or borrow one of the Bud Ukes for a Community Uke Jam in Library Hall. This will be the initial gathering for anyone interested in the new Steamboat Uke Jammers club that will start later in the month.

The library will be giving away special Bud Ukes door prizes during the evening, as well. For more information about the film, the Uke Jam and the library’s free ukulele loan program, visit
