HELP APPRECIATEDIt was Monday afternoon at around 4 p.m. when two nameless men of our community were so generous of their time. I was traveling home to McCoy on County Road 20 when my 4-year-old daughter, Izabel, was feeling ill and needed to get out of the car quickly. While trying to get out of the traffic, I pulled over to the side but I went too far. I managed to get half of my car into the bar ditch to the point of the cattails pressing up against the side windows. We were sunk! I was able to get my daughter out of the car when the first dark green pickup truck stopped and asked if we needed help.

The kind gentleman did not have a tow rope but a phone for me to use to phone my mother-in-law.

As I was speaking to my mother-in-law, a second pickup stopped with a tow rope.

The gracious gentleman in the white TCD crew cab just backed up and handed the first guy the tow rope. I was not even off the phone before they hooked up my car and drug it out of the ditch.

I was thinking we would be there for a long time and I do not believe five minutes passed and we were happily on the road again!

I just wanted to thank the gentlemen again and to let our community know that kindness and compassion are alive in kicking in Routt County!

A BAD IDEAIt is my belief that the “people” section in your Best of Steamboat contest is a bad idea and should not be included in this contest. I lived in Seattle for years and I am quite aware that these contests are nothing new in big cities. I can understand how a small town works.

In a town like Steamboat, a popularity contest among professionals cannot serve any good purpose. It is understandable that you may want to run a “which professional is the best schmoozer contest,” but please not a “Best of” when you have no foundation for your answers. I am certain that individuals as well as businesses are not supportive of this.

For example, did you know that there are only five family practice doctors in this town? What if 12 people out of 8,000 vote for one of them and they win.

Are they “the best”? Have you provided accurate information to a new family in town?

I really don’t care if you judge the best vodka tonic in town or the best green run on Mount Werner. None of these things hurt or divide or take business away from anyone or any business.

Do you want to do something fun and good for Steamboat? Run the contest so that no business, person or group is hurt or offended in the process.
