Letter to the editor: Vacancy tax ‘ill-conceived’
Letter to the editor

Dear Steamboat Neighbors,
Our family has been coming to Steamboat for over 20 years. Over these years we have made many good friends, created enduring family memories, and felt warmly welcomed.
Feeling part of the community we have expressed our sense of belonging by supporting such institutions as Casey’s Pond, Strings, Seminars, SAM, and the Tread of Pioneers Museum. We are not unique.
There are many other second homeowners who, like us, have given their time, energy, talents, and yes, money to support this vibrant city.
The proposed vacancy tax, if passed, will make it clear that we are no longer welcome. If we are subject to it we will have to decide whether to leave or stay. If we choose to stay and are deemed subject to the tax, we will be forced to withdraw our support for those institutions that are vital to the spirit of the boat.
If you rob Peter, we cannot pay Paul. I write in the hope that the polls are wrong. That those eligible to vote (not those who may be affected by it) will reject this ill-conceived tax.
That the welcome mat will still be open. That the council will find more equitable ways to address the city’s revenue needs.
