Letter to the editor: Community embraces Choose When

A sincere and heartfelt thank you to all of you who came on March 15 to attend the first Focus on Women event and hear about the Choose When project. To those of you who couldn’t make it, thank you for your support, financial and emotional.

The standing-room-only crowd at Library Hall heard Kathleen Wasserman of Choose When and Isabel Sawhill, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, speak about the tough realities experienced by women, their families and the community, as the result of unplanned pregnancy.

They heard about the personal and financial hardships that are both a cause and a consequence of unplanned pregnancy. And they learned about the good that Choose When can do by providing the most effective forms of long-acting, reversible birth control at low or no cost to women in Northwest Colorado.

When women have the power to Choose When to have a child, everyone benefits: the women themselves, their children and families, as well as the community.

Choose When’s goal of making long-acting birth control available to women in Northwest Colorado will become a reality on April 1, when Choose When’s partners, Northwest Colorado Health, Planned Parenthood and YampaCare For Women, begin offering contraception funded by the project.

Our evening at Library Hall raised awareness and almost $10,000, and donations continue to come in. Choose When is well over halfway to raising the $200,000 it needs to provide this service to women who want and need it.

Our thanks go out to the people of our community who have embraced this project with enthusiasm and generosity.

We are all in this together.
