Lady Sailors down Huskies in three

The Battle Mountain volleyball team showed up ready to play Thursday but was overmatched by an impressive Steamboat Springs squad that took the match, 3-0.

Sailor’s captain Hannah Gary led the charge with 12 kills and just three errors, a ratio coach Wendy Hall said the two have been working on all year.

“We have been struggling with her kill-to-error ratio all year,” Hall said. “She got that down where it needed to be for tonight, and every night. That was nice to see.”

As dominant as the Sailors were, the night was not a total loss for the Huskies. They played a scrappy game, with bodies flying everywhere, and no shortage of hustle for the home squad. Unfortunately, they offered too many “easy freeballs” and “unforced errors,” coach Brian Doyon saud.

“Unforced errors were a tough part of the game tonight,” Doyon said. “(The Sailors) are a very skilled team that doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. They make you make the mistakes, and we made quite a few down the stretch. We played good defense and hustled, but the mistakes killed us.”

Helping Battle Mountain stay competitive was fiery play by Skylar Hand in the middle, Amy Oliver, who had 11 attacks and four kills, and Jenny Hughes, a junior varsity swing player, who had nine attacks and five kills.

Despite the Huskies’ efforts, Steamboat Springs won 25-18, 25-17 and 25-11.

Next up for the Sailors is a doubleheader on the road Saturday, stopping first at Fruita and then moving on to play Palisade.
