Lacrosse team prepares for tourney

The Steamboat Springs men’s lacrosse team is hosting the third annual Steamboat Invitational tournament this weekend. Six teams are scheduled to play 11 games today and Sunday.

The defending champion Denver Hooligans will be at the tournament, along with the Denver Altitude and teams from Gunnison, Vail and Western State College. The Hooligans have won the tournament every year it has taken place.

This is Steamboat’s biggest season in terms of team size. About 30 people have played this summer. Players vary in age from 16 to mid-40s. The top 20 or so players will make up the team’s roster for the tournament.

Games will start at 10:30 a.m. both days. Six games will be played on Saturday, and five will be played on Sunday. The tournament is double elimination.

Steamboat’s first game is at noon today. If Steamboat wins, the team will play at 4:45 p.m. If Steamboat loses, its next game will be Sunday.

The site for all games is Whistler Park.
