Lacrosse team focuses on skills

— Despite the inability to get a win, Bob Hiester said he and the Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse team had a productive weekend.

On Friday, the Sailors dropped two games one to Grandview and one to Ponderosa.

On Saturday, Grandview pounced again, using its experience and skill to defeat the Sailors 15-0 on the final afternoon of their inaugural two-day tournament.

The Wolves got seven first-period goals to set the tone early and dispersed eight more throughout the remaining three periods for the easy win.

Hiester thought his athletes played well after the first 12 minutes, but seven goals in any sport is tough to overcome, particularly if the team trying to come from behind is still learning the intricacies of the sport.

“Right now the biggest difference is stick skills,” Hiester said.

Steamboat is getting good spacing and running some offense, but little things like the ability to make clean passes and catch good passes that are made are fundamental skills the kids are continuing to develop.

However, Hiester said his athletes are getting to the point where the moral victories are starting to sting.

“They know enough about the game now that they feel the pain of defeat,” he said.

The boys lacrosse team returns to action Friday when they host Cheyenne Mountain in an 8 p.m. game at the high school.
