Lacrosse leaders want to construct large sports wall in Whistler Park
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs Parks and Recreation Commission could decide Wednesday whether Whistler Park is an appropriate place to host a large concrete wall that could improve sports training by bouncing back soccer, lacrosse and tennis balls to players.
The “bounce-back” wall is being planned by Steamboat Lacrosse, LLC, and would aim to benefit all types of youth sports.
Leaders of local youth lacrosse say this type of training amenity is lacking in Steamboat.
The six-foot thick wall would stand 20 feet tall and be 60 feet long.
The commission already has received some public comment on the wall from neighbors who are concerned about the noise of balls being bounced on it, the visual impact of the wall and its impact on other sports at the park.
One community member also expressed concern about the wall’s impact on wildlife migration, and its potential to be climbed on and vandalized.
There are four proposed locations for the wall that will be discussed Wednesday night.
If the commission endorses the wall, the structure would also have to be considered by the Steamboat Springs Planning Commission.
Proponents of the wall say there is already noise in Whistler and the wall would not add much to it.
They also say the wall could be painted in such a way that would make it not stand out as much.
The projected cost of the wall is $36,000, and it will be paid for and maintained by the lacrosse group.
The commissioners will discuss the wall at 5:30 p.m. in Citizens Hall.
