KZKS looks to locate in Steamboat

Tom Ross

Radio audiences in Steamboat Springs may soon be able to tune in a new country music station.

Cimarron Communications LLC has filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission that would permit it to construct a new FM translator station to rebroadcast KZKS-FM, which goes by the common name “Kiss Country.” The station bills itself as “Western Colorado’s Superstation.” It is owned by Western Slope Communications.

Station manager Steve Wennerstrom said his station reaches Western Slope communities from Meeker to Montrose and from Utah to Glenwood Canyon. However, he said he was not free to comment on the Steamboat application.

The application to the FCC indicates the station will be found at 104.7 MHz here and will broadcast with an effective power of 250 watts.

KZKS broadcasts 24 hours a day. It carries local news on the half hour three times in the morning and carries hourly news broadcasts from the Associated Press throughout the day.

Steamboat listeners can currently listen to country music formats on KBCR FM 96.5, and on KRAI AM 5500.

KZKS has a rotation of five on-air personalities beginning at 6 a.m. and continuing through 10 p.m. The 6-10 p.m. slot is held down by Chris “Conman” Conn, who graduated from Mesa State University in Grand Junction. He now has his own nationally syndicated show. Conn is known for using 30 character voices and coining colorful phrases.

For example, when Conn asks “Can you smell what I’m steppin’ in?” he is inquiring as to whether his audience is following what he is saying.

Western Slope Communications also operates “The Classic Rock Station,” which reaches listeners from Glenwood Springs to Aspen, and “The Eagle Classic Rock,” airing music from the 1970s and 1980s for listeners between Grand Junction and Montrose.
