Kristin Bantle: Review firearm safety

I woke up this morning to a disturbing news report, out of Georgia, where a 911 caller had pulled two unresponsive children out of a hot car. The report was graphic and heartbreaking, as the distraught caller was unable to revive the children.

This tragedy was avoidable, because it was foreseeable. The segment ended appropriately with the obviously needed reminders and warnings of the dangers of leaving your children or pets in a hot car.

Recently, a child in our community lost his life in a foreseeable and preventable tragedy. Gun tragedies can happen to anyone, and it only takes seconds if the gun is not properly secured.

This is the appropriate time for everyone to review their firearm safety practices. If you are not confident in your current practices, seek advice from a local professional, such as Ken at Elk River Guns. It is always the gun owner’s responsibility to safely secure their firearms, and failing to do so can be a criminal act.

Guns are a powerful tool in our lives. They help provide food, protect our homes and have the ability to bring us together in healthy family traditions. But they also can be used to kill, not only our enemies that threaten our way of life, but unfortunately people we love.

Having a gun in the home is a big responsibility and can never be taken lightly. Silence can be deadly. Lock them up.
