Kremmling boy dies in crash

— A 16-year-old boy died Tuesday night in an accident on icy roads between Rabbit Ears Pass and Kremmling.

The single-car rollover crash occurred about 10 p.m. near mile marker 160 on U.S. Highway 40, which is about three miles south of the Colorado Highway 14 turnoff to Walden.

Grand County Coroner Brenda Bock identified the boy as John David “JD” Guess. She said Guess was the star quarterback for the West Grand High School football team.

“The community is hurting big time right now,” Bock said.

Guess was driving home from football practice when the crash occurred.

Guess was driving his 1996 Ford pickup when he lost control, skidded off the left side of the road and traveled about 250 feet, rolling multiple times before stopping at the base of the embankment.

Guess was wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries. It was not suspected that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

“The Colorado State Patrol would like to remind drivers that road conditions can change quickly this time of year and to always wear your safety belt when traveling on Colorado’s roadways,” a news release stated.
