Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs High School senior Melissa Krause has been named the Steamboat Springs Optimist Club’s “Teen of the Month” for September. Melissa has a 4.5 GPA, participates in the school’s Link Crew, was elected by her peers to be on the Honor Council for the past three years, and she is co-president of the National Spanish Honor Society.
Melissa, 17, is also involved with Partners in Routt County, Vacation Bible School at Lutheran Church and is the captain of the high school ski team. Melissa said she grew up on Nordic skis and has raced every winter month since she was 6 years old.
“I am very active and love to play sports,” she said. “I have played soccer since pre-school and have been a part of the Steamboat Sailors girls soccer team since my freshman year. I also ran cross country and played club tennis. I also like to climb mountains, road bike and bake.”
Melissa plans on attending college on the East Coast and pursuing a career in psychology while continuing to ski on a club team. She hopes to also qualify for the 2008 Scandinavian Cup in Europe in February.
“This is the time of our lives where our actions become our habits of life,” she said. “We can benefit from wonderful opportunities if we take advantage of all that surrounds us. Be proactive and you can become the person you want to be.
