Kirk Morse Crowner: 1922-2006

Former Yampa resident Kirk Morse Crowner died April 7, 2006, surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 84.

Kirk was born and raised on the Crowner ranch near Yampa, as was his father.

Kirk finished high school in Yampa and later attended Colorado State University until World War II. At this time, he joined Crowner & Sons, and they provided hay for the training camp of the 10th Mountain Division in Pando. He later served in the European Theater as an engineer in the 126th Battalion of the 10th Mountain Division in Italy.

Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned to his beloved mountains and joined his father and brother in ranching and produce production. He later worked as a maintenance foreman for Pittsburg & Midway Coal Company (Edna Mine) in Oak Creek. During the 11 years before his retirement, he sold heavy equipment throughout Northwest Colorado and Wyoming.

He also served as Routt County commissioner. He was instrumental in obtaining an ambulance for the Yampa area.

Kirk married Coline Stormes of Oak Creek in the First Methodist Church of Temple, Texas. To this union of 62 years, three daughters were born. Becky and Karen spent a great deal of time with him at the ranch and were the joy of his life.

Kirk was preceded in death by his parents, C.E. Crowner and Pearl Reed Crowner; and a baby daughter.

He is survived by his wife, Coline Crowner; daughters Becky and her husband Richard Cockerill of Vienna, Va., and Karen and her husband Ted Gilroy of Hayden; a brother Earl and his wife Flora Crowner of Grand Junction; three grandchildren, Kristin Coline and her husband Anthony Peredo of Albuquerque, N.M., and Mark and Michael Cockerill of Vienna, Va.; two nephews, Terry and his wife Susi Crowner of Yampa and Gary and his wife Tootie Crowner of Walden; and a great-granddaughter, Sierra Peredo of Albuquerque, N.M.

Kirk was dearly loved and will be missed by all his family.

A memorial service was held April 15, 2006, at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
