Kindergarten registration encouraged this week
April 27, 2004
Parents interested in registering their children for kindergarten classes in the Steamboat Springs School District are being asked to do so this week.
Registration for the district’s half-day kindergarten program began Monday at Strawberry Park and Soda Creek elementary schools.
As of Tuesday, Strawberry Park had received registration forms for 16 students, office manager Pam Brandt said. About 60 students are enrolled in kindergarten at the school this year.
Parents can request a morning or afternoon class for their children, but final decisions will be made based on individual family needs, Brandt said. Families requesting a morning class are asked to write a letter explaining their needs relative to class times.
Though parents can register their children for kindergarten through the summer, the district asks families to register this week to help it determine school staffing needs. A high number of registrations at either school could necessitate the hiring of additional kindergarten teachers.
Superintendent Donna Howell said the district will continue to keep kindergarten class sizes at 20 students or fewer. This year’s kindergarten classes have 19 and 20 students, she said.

Parents who want to register their kindergarten-age children can do so at the main office of both schools between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. A birth certificate or passport, as well as immunization records, are mandatory for all registrations.
State public school districts receive funding for kindergarten students registered by Oct. 1 of each year in the amount of half the funding received for full-time students.
