Ken Collins: It’s broke

The tragedy in the Gulf has brought up a lot of questions about the safety of drilling offshore, especially in deep water. President Barack Obama shutting down drilling with the moratorium has caused economic troubles for the residents of that region. An argument against the moratorium has been that when an airline crashes, we don't shut down the whole industry. No, we don't. But we have a black box that tells us what exactly happened. Quite often, it's pilot error. But if it's mechanical, it is unique to that plane and situation.

We have no idea the problem — or more likely, the problems — that led to this disaster. And I can't help but wonder this: If all the major oil companies are drilling off shore, why haven't any of them come up with a plan to help this environmental disaster? Maybe it's because they don't have a solution. And maybe the moratorium is not such a bad idea. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Well, it's broke.
