Kathleen Huron: Please slow down

Kathleen Huron

I am writing this letter to urge people who use 13th Street and pass through the Fairview neighborhood to please slow down. The posted speed limit is 25 mph, but more than half of the cars that travel through 13th Street on their way to town or out of town are exceeding the speed limit by a dangerous amount.

I, as do many residents of Fairview, use 13th Street often to access downtown, my mailbox and Emerald Mountain. I fear for my safety and my children's safety almost every time I leave my driveway. The lane marked for pedestrians and bikers is very confusing for users and has resulted in accidents that could have been avoided. The lane only allows for users to walk into town with their backs to speeding traffic. This is very unnerving, especially with small children.

It only takes one speeding or distracted driver to ruin a family's life as well as their own forever. The neighborhood of Brooklyn should serve as an example for our neighborhood. It has two stop signs, a welcome sign into the neighborhood and "SLOW" painted as a reminder on the street. Our neighborhood definitely sees more traffic, is home to many more families and we provide the entrance to a very popular hiking area in our city. I strongly encourage the Steamboat Springs City Council and the public safety department to act immediately to avoid a tragedy before it happens.
