Katherine Cain: Churches should not water down the gospel truth

As I read the Public Welcoming Statement from the Steamboat United Methodist Church in Sunday’s Steamboat Pilot & Today, I was left with the question, what is the aim of a Christian church? Diversity, inclusivity?
Yes, to the extent that all are beloved by God as unique individuals. But can too much focus on diversity and inclusiveness lead to an “anything goes” type church? I believe it can if the teachings of Jesus Christ become subservient to the pastor/leader’s ideas about unity.
Back to my question about the aim of any Christian church. It has to be to follow the example and teachings of Jesus Christ in totality; not to pick and choose which of those teachings suit us and rationalize away the ones we find hard to follow. We do no one any favors by watering down the gospel.
Jesus said that it is the narrow road, not the wide road, that leads to life. All Christian churches owe their congregations the unadulterated gospel truth.
