Kara Givnish and Paul Sachs: Event collaboration

Heading into this summer, we knew the Lincoln Avenue construction was going to cause significant challenges for the Steamboat Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K. Rerouting the course was not a viable option for many reasons, including keeping the USATF course certification that allows runners to qualify for other races such as the Boston Marathon. In the last few days prior to the Steamboat Marathon, Scott Contracting and the Colorado Department of Transportation went above and beyond anything we could have expected.

Cody Patterson with Scott Contracting, Justin Kuhn with CDOT, and their teams put in extra time and effort that allowed us to keep the running route and traffic pattern the same as in previous years. Scott Contracting also dedicated additional time and resources to complete the section in front of the Routt County Courthouse for the finish of all three races. Scott Contracting was not contractually required to assist with the logistics of this event, but they did so at their own cost to support our community.

The Steamboat Marathon brings to town 2,000-plus runners along with their families and friends in addition to being a tradition for local runners. The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association takes pride in providing a positive visitor experience, and Scott Contracting helped us make that possible for the Steamboat Marathon visitors.

We would like to extend a thank you to Capt. Joel Rae and the Steamboat Springs Police Department for their guidance and perseverance in keeping the marathon route the same. Special thanks also goes to Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue, Tom Whiddon and the Community Service Officers, the Public Works Department, the City Clerk's Office, Steamboat Springs Transit, Routt County Road and Bridge and the Steamboat Marathon committee for their assistance with the race.

Lastly, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Scott Contracting, CDOT and the Steamboat Springs community for their support of this event.
