Junior freestylers hit slopes in January

— The Junior Freestyle program at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club will have the home-slope advantage when the season opens Jan. 6.

“This is kind of an introduction to competition at a higher level for these kids,” said Wendy Allen, freestyle program director. “It’s a neat event and Howelsen is a good place to have it.”

The mogul event will begin at 10 a.m. on the face of Howelsen Hill. Allen said 100 skiers, about 25 from Steamboat Springs and 75 from other regional squads, will take part in the event.

The cost to enter the event is $15 before Jan. 2 and $20 after that.

The skiers in this event will range in age from 8 to 13 years. It will be the first of five development or junior events held across the region this winter.

Allen said Vail, Aspen, Winter Park and the Purgatory ski area would also act as hosts for the series. Some of the events will also include a second day for upright airs.

‘The kids in our program are truly amazing,” Allen said. “They are going to be hard to stop when they get older.”

“We are going to have programs from all over the region in town for this one,” Allen said.

“It should be a lot of fun, and I think everybody is ready to get going.”
