Julia Ustun: CHP+ needs to be funded

The future of CHP+ is in the hands of our lawmakers. On Jan. 31, 2018, funding for CHP+ could run out leaving 9 million children and pregnant women nationwide without health coverage.

Five-hundred families in Routt County are currently enrolled with CHP+, and many of them have no other options for insuring their children or their pregnancies. A lot of the kids have pre-existing conditions that require expensive medications or are in treatment for chronic illnesses. All of these kids will fall off any affordable insurance coverage if we do not urge our representatives in Congress to act fast.

My family will be directly affected by this. My husband and I are both employed and working 40-plus hours a week. We are able to insure ourselves through our jobs, but to add a child to our plan is simply not in the budget. Our son is enrolled with CHP+. We are part of a very large group of Americans stuck in the middle, between qualifying for government assistance and being able to afford a normal lifestyle.

It’s not easy for a person with pride to admit that the loss of CHP+ would mean less money for groceries, but it needs to be said for the 9 million families that face a budget crisis at the cost of their children’s health coverage.

I urge all of us to call our Congress people — Representative Scott Tipton at 719-542-1073 or Senator Cory Gardner at 202-224-5941 to express the need to re-fund CHP+.
