Judy Copeland: Reconsider Drake

I would respectfully request that the people responsible for the forced departure of Steamboat Springs High School football coach Mark Drake reconsider their action.

I also would ask that the parties who initiated this action come forward and state their case. Who are they? Administrators, School Board members or others? I am betting they are neither student athletes nor parents.

Our grandson, who is in one of coach Drake’s classes, tells me he is respected by the students — athletes and nonathletes — and in turn, Drake respects them.

Coach Drake has encouraged our grandson to be a part of this year’s winning football team, which has been a positive experience for him.

It seems to me that the Steamboat Springs School District has had more than a great deal in having this man as an employee in a situation where, I understand, he is taking less salary and still doing his job.

I would like to encourage those students who were chanting, “We want Drake,” at the last football game to write letters and petition to keep this outstanding coach for our younger grandson and others.
