John Robert Wither

July 14, 1944- June 20, 2017

John was born July 14th, 1944 to Frances Colt Wither and Robert Archibald Wither of Steamboat Springs, CO.  John died on June 20th, 2017 after a six-month battle with brain cancer.  He passed peacefully at home while surrounded by his family.  John and his siblings (Pete and Sally) grew up in Steamboat Springs and enjoyed all that it had to offer (skiing, hiking, and the outdoors).  He graduated from Yampa Valley College and received his Masters in Education from Indiana State University.  He went on to teach in Indiana, Indianapolis for a number of years before returning to Steamboat to teach at Whiteman School.

John loved to travel, explore the outdoors, read, teach, ski, and make great jokes; but most of all he loved his family.  He and his wife Cindy are truly soul mates and are the very definition of true love.  He was endlessly proud of his two children and their families.  His son Jason and his wife Sara, and their two children Ian and Matthew brought so much joy to John’s life.  His daughter Allison and her husband Aaron had the privilege of living with John and Cindy over the past few months and they shared many international adventures together.

Throughout his life John embodied a gentle love and kindness that was felt by everyone who knew him.  He was a man of few words, but when he spoke he showed love, caring, and a fantastically dry sense of humor.  John’s sense of adventure and passion for travel grew through many foreign trips with Whiteman school.  In 1993 he and his family moved to Berlin, Germany where he and Cindy taught at the John F Kennedy School.  While living in Berlin, the family enjoyed many adventures throughout Europe and the rest of the world.  In 2001 John and Cindy moved to Lusaka, Zambia to teach at the American International School of Lusaka.  Upon returning to Steamboat in 2003, John and Cindy’s travel adventures continued and their many trips included: India, Thailand, Laos, Cuba, Latvia, Russia, Ethiopia, Morocco, and many more.

John is survived by his wife Cindy, son Jason (wife Sara Woodworth, their children Ian and Matthew), daughter Allison (husband Aaron Bergemann), brother Pete (wife Barbi), sister Sally and their families as well as many friends around the world.

A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m., Sunday, June 25th, 2017 at Yampa Valley Funeral Home. Please bring a small rock in honor of john to the service
