John Fry: Rodeo needs to be part of Howelsen discussion
We might want to consider retaining the PRC Rodeo, with respect to the Howelsen redevelopment discussion, if we wish to retain our core identity and past as a cowboy ski town. The iconic event has only recently considered eliminating Steamboat from the circuit. Lest we forget, that temporarily was pulled from the fires a few short years ago. That discussion will occur again.
The property at the base of Howelsen Hill can serve to uniquely preserve and celebrate our history, if we respond appropriately at this critical time.
I might suggest anchoring down our core, including this event with great planning and special focus of any proposed development. It will serve us more into the future than anchoring a piece of playground equipment or risk discarding a heritage that’s perhaps more essential to our place among a crowded field of “me too’s” across the map.
Most if not all resorts and cities can boast another park. None can boast that to which we hold, the core of our identity, together with the wonderful abundance of nature surrounding us. Preserving it can anchor a key part of what supports our revenue base and community at large.
Develop a master plan seeking to engage more events to the proposed area with consideration towards what otherwise could quickly vanish. By effectively doing so, we will help retain an important and unique part of our identity, building on it and simultaneously demonstrating our commitment around which the PRC may also identify and support.
