John Ameen: What year is this?

The Middle East has exploded into war, nuclear rivals in Iran and North Korea are challenging the United States’ resolve, the economy is a roller coaster ride, and the American people lack faith, trust and confidence in their president.

In recent weeks, many baby boomers might be having flashbacks to the mid- to late-60s. Although our nuclear rival was solely the U.S.S.R., the Middle East War was fought among different participants, the economy was not as diversified, and Lyndon Johnson was our president, the occurrences of recent weeks show that the cliche “History repeats itself” is true. However, my main concern as a historian and a teacher is not so much this cliche, but the question: “Has the world learned anything from its past?” Sadly enough, all too often, the answer is “no.”
