Jerry Strahan: Correction about BLM

I would like to take this opportunity to clarify some factual errors in a recent Steamboat Pilot & Today editorial regarding the Little Snake Resource Management Plan (RMP) revision process.

The public is encouraged to download the fact sheets for this RMP on our website at http://www.co.blm.gov/lsra/rmp/. The correct e-mail address to send comments to is colsrmp@blm.gov.

If Alternative C (the Preferred Alternative) were selected, it would reduce the area “open” to OHVs from 991,920 acres to 21,940 acres, limiting OHV use to existing roads and trails. This designation does not close an area to OHVs, but requires OHV users to stay on existing routes. In Alternative C, 1,039,500 acres would receive this “limited to existing roads and trails” designation and 86,710 acres, 7 percent of BLM surface, would be off-limits to OHV use.

If selected, Alternative D in the RMP would close 289,650 acres to OHVs, with another 161,810 acres closed during the spring months for the wild horse foaling season. Oil and gas leasing would be deferred on 275,630 acres, or 14 percent of the BLM-managed minerals. Snowmobile use would be closed on 861,030 acres, or 66 percent of BLM surface acres. Alternative D is the most restrictive alternative, and although the areas off-limits to these uses are more than the other alternatives, it would not close all BLM land in the Little Snake Field Office to these uses.

Thank you for helping us encourage public participation and comment on the Draft RMP.
