Jerry Rudolph: Listen to Byrd

Does the Bush administration want to be the leaders of a totally controlled world empire? Sadly, they appear to want everything.

As longtime Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-West Virginia, wrote in his last letter requesting contributions for the upcoming election:

“If the history of republics present and past teaches one consistent lesson, sure it is this: Tyranny rarely arrives on the scene in a sudden and dramatic moment that stirs the hearts of all patriots, and liberties are never usurped in a single outrageous act that arouses the public ire.

“No, freedom disappears slowly, fading away under the cover of night, wrapped in the flag and cloaked in the rhetoric of crisis. One by one they disappear – each deprivation a seemingly reasonable step – until suddenly they are gone, and the time for citizens to rise up has fled.”
