Jena Griswold: I’ll close lobbyist loopholes and stop secret political spending
October 24, 2018
My name is Jena Griswold, and I am running for Colorado secretary of state. I fundamentally believe that every eligible Coloradan — Republican, Democrat and Independent, alike — deserves to have their voice heard in accessible and secure elections. As secretary of state, I will work to increase voter participation, stop secret political spending in our elections, and provide small-business owners and entrepreneurs the tools they need to succeed.
I grew up in a working-class family in Estes Park that faced financial difficulties and, at times, received help from local food banks. I started working the summer after seventh grade to help out, and I saw that a lot of Colorado families struggled.
This inspired me to be the first person in my family to attend a four-year college and then law school. I became an attorney, worked to protect our right to vote and opened up my own small business.
I am running because I know firsthand how important it is for every Coloradan's voice to be heard and every vote to count. As secretary of state, I will protect our constitutional right to vote, fix our broken statewide voter registration system that causes long lines and delays, and bolster election cybersecurity to safeguard from cyberattack.
I also believe corruption has no place in Colorado. That is why I will close lobbyist loopholes and work to pass campaign-finance laws that stop secret political spending. Politicians and special interests need to play by the rules.
Lastly, I plan to make the office into a small-business resource center to support new business owners.
The secretary of state should fortify our democracy. That's what I hope to do. I would be honored to earn your support and your vote.
