Jeff Peters: Douglas off-base

Regarding Rob Douglas' "Are we not better than this?" in the Nov. 2 Steamboat Today:

Yes, Rob Douglas, we are better than that. We also are better than being apologists for a self-serving conservative commentator of the likes of Ann Coulter. Ms. Coulter makes her living as a political pundit. In a sea of political pundits who infest all areas of the media from newspapers to TV, radio and the blogosphere, Ms. Coulter has discovered a way to stand out among the rest and make lots of money in the mold of other entertainers like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh who pose as political pundits — demean people, say nasty things about people, speak loud and often and don't worry about the truth.

That she recently outdid herself by choosing to denigrate the office of the president of the United States by calling the president a "retard" was another of her insane attempts to get media attention, which unfortunately it did, and have sycophants like you blindly apologize, albeit half-heartedly, on her behalf.

That Ms. Coulter herself refuses to apologize publicly for her hateful remark not only toward the office of the president of the United States but to those with special needs speaks volumes about her selfish callous insensitivity and her nasty self-serving need for attention and money. Those are traits that unfortunately seem to be indicative of many who recently co-opted the once great and proud Republican Party.

That you found it necessary to apologize for Ms. Coulter and to basically defend her unpatriotic denigration of the office of the president of the United States might lead one to think twice about your credentials as a viable political pundit.

While Ms. Coulter makes too much money to be bothered to speak like an intelligent adult and change her approach to punditry, I sincerely hope that your defense of her was a one-time misguided error.

By the way, let us not forget that it was Ms. Coulter who famously said, "If we don't run Chris Christie, Romney will be the nominee and we'll lose."
