Jeff Peters: A shift to the right?

How interesting to read Wednesday’s ViewPoints page in the Steamboat Today.

The byline of the editorial read “Conservative approach needed for city.” The only letter to the editor carried on about deleting commentary by liberal columnists. The only commentary was written by conservative pundit Cal Thomas. This leads one to wonder if the direction of Steamboat Today has taken a marked shift to the right with its new editor.

But back to the letter “To the new editor.” The writer wants Steamboat Today to become a mouthpiece for conservative Republican ideology. The writer would have commentary by Paul Krugman, who won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences along with the John Bates Clark Medal, Prince of Asturias Awards and H.C. Recktenwald Prize in Economics, replaced by the rantings of conservative pundit Ann Coulter. Let’s take a look at Ms. Coulter’s political views by reviewing a few of her statements over the years:

“God gave us the earth. We have dominion over the plants, the animals, the trees. God said, ‘Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It’s yours.’”

— Coulter, on Fox News, June 20, 2001

“I don’t really like to think of it as murder. It’s terminating Tiller in the 203rd trimester.”

— Coulter, defending the murder of Doctor George Tiller during a Fox News interview, June 22, 2009

“If we took away women’s right to vote, we’d never have to worry about another Democrat president. It’s kind of a pipe dream, it’s a personal fantasy of mine, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. And it’s a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women.”

— Coulter during an interview with New York Observer, October 2007

“We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too.”

— Coulter addressing CPAC, January 2002

Coulter is not a sassy pundit, as the writer of the letter to the editor would lead us to think. Coulter in her own words explains exactly what she is.

“I’m a Christian first, and a mean-spirited, bigoted conservative second, and don’t you ever forget it.”

— Coulter’s book “If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans,” 2007

Let us hope that the new editor of Steamboat Today keeps the newspaper’s political reporting fair and balanced but not in the manner of Fox News’ biased version of the term “fair and balanced.”
