Janice Illian: Mount Werner Water

In response to ex-City Council member Jim Engelken’s letter in the Oct. 31 Steamboat Today, it most definitely is not a fact that Mount Werner Water owes the city any money.

The district has operated under a 1980 agreement with the city to treat the district wastewater and pay for that treatment based on the metered flow percentage of the actual cost of operation and maintenance. For 23 years, the district has paid every quarterly statement submitted by the city in a timely matter, in addition to a portion of every wastewater tap fee received. Mount Werner Water customers pay their fair share.

The Water Commission exists to improve communication and cooperation between Mount Werner Water and the city of Steamboat Springs. The two entities have a good working relationship and are working on complex issues such as the Fish Creek District dissolution, the unmetered wastewater and the water the city receives from the district at no cost.

However, the real story is that the same people who worked diligently to defeat consolidation with unfactual accusations are trying to make this an adversarial relationship and disrupt the good work of the commission.
