Jane Dougherty: Wear Orange to end gun violence

My family first visited Steamboat Springs in 1994. We have spent many wonderful summer vacations over the years on Mount Werner. Steamboat Springs has come to mean so much to me. It is a place where I can feel at peace. I can also leave my heartbreak behind. My heartbreak stems from my family being devastated by gun violence. Gun violence can happen to anyone. That is why I will be participating in the Wear Orange campaign.

The Wear Orange campaign is dedicated to honoring the lives of those affected by gun violence and elevating gun violence prevention efforts nationwide. Wear Orange isn’t about politics, the gun debate or choosing sides; it’s about ending gun violence and saving lives.

We all share a sense of crisis around the fact the gun violence ravages too many American families; my family is one of those. My sister, Mary Sherlach, was the brave school psychologist who was killed tying to protect her kids at Sandy Hook. Mary gave her life that morning in December. Now, in her honor, I work to bring awareness to this issue.

Wear Orange aims to inspire those who think we can all do more to save lives from gun violence to do one simple thing: Wear Orange on June 2, National Gun Violence Awareness Day. I wore orange for my sister, Mary.

Looking forward to the Hot Air Balloon Show in July.
