James DeFrancia: Media simply reports the facts

Mr. Juergen Kuhmann, in his letter published in the Steamboat Pilot & Today on June 30, states that the media are inundating us with false views on how bad the economy is these days.

I suggest that the first point of clarity is that the media simply report facts, from a variety of sources.

Those facts, from a number of economists, financial institutions, academics and federal agencies, suggest that the economy is not anywhere near as robust as the Trump Administration and Mr. Kuhmann would have us believe.

Full employment? Sure, if you discount the fact that wages, adjusted for inflation, are about where they were 20 years ago. Meanwhile, Wall Street investment bankers are making fortunes.

Full employment? Sure, if you ignore that people are underemployed: college graduates doing mundane chores, skilled laborers doing the same.

And, Mr. Kuhmann, there is no “media narrative,” just news, news of many things.

News of families being separated by Border Patrol agents and small children taken from their mothers.

News of government officials abusing their authority and their office.

News of insults being hurled by the President against allies, while he tosses praise to obvious enemies.

News of record government borrowings to burden our children and grandchildren.

News of racist attacks.

News of neo-Nazi rallies.

Just read the news, about actual events, and then explain why everything is so wonderful.

Or, of course, you can just listen to the White House Huckster spin it his way, while you take another sip of his snake oil medicine.
