Jacki Hofman: CRNAs provide high quality care

Dear Editor:

In the column, “Monday Medical: Anesthesia basics,” which published in the Steamboat Pilot & Today on June 25, Dr. Sarah Gebauer, an anesthesiologist at UC Health Yampa Valley Medical Center, is quoted often on various anesthesia techniques and safety.

Though I agree with most of the article, she only refers to the “anesthesiologist” as the individual medical provider patients interact with as part of the anesthesia process.

If the purpose of the column is to educate readers and ultimately patients, Dr. Gebauer would have more accurately referred to “anesthesia providers,” because a significant number of cases in hospitals and surgery centers in Colorado and throughout the nation are handled either independently by Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) or in collaboration between CRNAs and Anesthesiologists.

In fact, CRNAs provide over 43 million anesthetics annually and serve as the sole anesthesia provider in many rural and suburban communities. With no difference in outcome or safety, as documented by numerous long-term studies, CRNAs provide high-quality, cost-effective care.
