J. Larry Gray: A comedian?

This letter is in response to the column “Ask Mr. Grammar Person,” by David Grimes. The column appeared in the Feb. 20 Steamboat Today.

Does this guy think he’s a comedian? The column was simply terrible.

First, both questions involved the difference between the subjective and objective cases of nouns. This was not even addressed by Mr. Grammar. Instead, he accused one reader of some type of sodomy with the phrase “… particularly if he is not wearing a condom.” What, if anything, does this have to do with sharing a cheeseburger? I would suppose that the two cut it in half and did not exchange bodily fluids.

Second, to answer the questions posed: “I is the subjective case, and me is the objective case; who is the subjective case, and whom is the objective case. For the young readers of this newspaper, here’s an easy way to tell the difference: The subjective case is generally followed by a verb: I ran, I saw, Jason and I shared, who ran, who saw, Jason and who shared; the objective case is generally preceded by a preposition: ran with me, ran from me, ran by whom, ran for whom.

I’d like to believe that the teachers in Routt County teach these things. It is important for students who wish to further their education to have a firm grasp of the English language. As a tutor at Colorado Mountain College, I see that students often do not understand these basic principles.
